  • X-Mas & Ema Fusion Party at L- Café in Shikata Campus

On December 19th, L Café at Shikata Campus hosted the X-mas & Ema Fusion Party. Students from Japan, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Ghana, along with professors and administrative staff, participated in the event to promote international exchange and support the SDGs. In line with the SDGs, we recycled a discarded tree trunk and decorated it as a Christmas tree during the party. This activity promoted sustainable living by reducing waste and protecting nature. After self-introductions, students shared explanations of their Christmas and Ema traditions. They then created decorations and origami cranes, wrote their New Year’s wishes on cards, and enjoyed a gift exchange and potluck together. Students experienced a warm and harmonious environment, exchanging both traditions and cultures, and fostering global understanding.

  • Learning with the Community Seminar: “Health and Resilience during Natural Disasters”

On Friday, November 7th, the Learning with the Community Seminar “Health and Resilience during Natural Disasters: Community Response and Recovery after the 2018 Western Japan Heavy Rain Disaster”, organized by Shikata L-Café, was held with eight participants, including both Japanese and international students interested in the topic. In the first half of the seminar, guest speaker Ms. Natsuko Kataoka from the SOUL home nursing (NPO) introduced the collaborative support system created by local residents in Mabi area during the major flooding disaster in 2018. She also explained how the SOUL home nursing’s initiatives contributed not only to post-disaster health care, but also to the mental recovery of the community. Participants were divided into two groups and actively exchanged their views.
Participants commented that the seminar was a meaningful opportunity to consider how they, as university students, can contribute to mutual aid within the community. The event deepened awareness of the importance of disaster prevention and community resilience, and by sharing perspectives between Japanese and international students, emphasized the need for culturally sensitive approaches to disaster preparedness and mitigation.

  • Welcome Party for Shikata International Students

On Wednesday, October 29, L-Café on the Shikata Campus hosted its first event to promote internationalization on the Shikata Campus: the “Welcome Party for International Students.”
At the opening, Zulema Arias, Coordinator of L-Café, explained the purpose of L-Café and the aims of the event. Afterwards, all participants briefly introduced themselves. A total of 38 participants attended, including students from Japan, Nepal, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Turkey, Vietnam, and Myanmar, as well as faculty and administrative staff members. In the first part of the program, students from El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Bolivia introduced the cultures and traditions of their home countries. In the second part, all participants enjoyed dancing together to Latin American music such as salsa, merengue, and cumbia. At the end of the event, participants spent time chatting, laughing, and deepening their understanding of one another’s cultures and interests, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout. As part of the ongoing efforts to promote internationalization on the Shikata Campus, these activities enabled students to improve their English and Japanese language skills while deepening their understanding of diverse cultures and traditions, and to share a meaningful time with one another.
L-Café on the Shikata Campus will continue to host multicultural exchange events, and we look forward to welcoming more students, faculty, and staff in the future.

  • Big American Party

Date and Time: July 23 (Wed.), 15:00–18:00
Venue: L-café, Tsushima Campus

On July 23, the “Latin America Party” was held at L-café on the Tsushima Campus. A total of 22 participants joined the event, including international students from El Salvador, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, France, the United States, the Netherlands, India, Italy, China, and Malaysia, along with Japanese students and staff.

Participants enjoyed cultural exchange over Mexican cuisine and engaged in a variety of activities, such as introductions to Latin American countries, music, dance lessons in merengue, salsa, cumbia, and bachata, as well as a piñata game and karaoke.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to interact, deepen their understanding of each other’s cultures, and build friendships. It was a truly meaningful occasion that highlighted the significance of international exchange.
