On Friday, November 7th, the Learning with the Community Seminar “Health and Resilience during Natural Disasters: Community Response and Recovery after the 2018 Western Japan Heavy Rain Disaster”, organized by Shikata L-Café, was held with eight participants, including both Japanese and international students interested in the topic. In the first half of the seminar, guest speaker Ms. Natsuko Kataoka from the SOUL home nursing (NPO) introduced the collaborative support system created by local residents in Mabi area during the major flooding disaster in 2018. She also explained how the SOUL home nursing’s initiatives contributed not only to post-disaster health care, but also to the mental recovery of the community. Participants commented that the seminar was a meaningful opportunity to consider how they, as university students, can contribute to mutual aid within the community. The event deepened awareness of the importance of disaster prevention and community resilience, and by sharing perspectives between Japanese and international students, emphasized the need for culturally sensitive approaches to disaster preparedness and mitigation.
