Cariogenic and periodontopathic bacteria demonstrate their pathogenicity by forming biofilm, and are considered to be major etiologic agents associated with dental caries and periodontal disease, as well as development of genetic diseases. We have performed analyses of the surface protein of these bacteria using molecular biological techniques and animal models. Furthermore, biofilm formation has been shown to be controlled by the signal transduction system. Investigations to clarify that system are providing interesting findings and expected to lead establishment of effective methods for prevention of various type of diseases.
