To make a new drug, it is necessary to infect experimental animals with bacteria and understand the molecular mechanism of infection. Experimental animals such as mice have ethical and cost issues, making it difficult to carry out multiple infection experiments. Silkworm, a lepidopteran insect, has fewer of these problems and is susceptible to human pathogenic bacteria.
